Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
