Unusual Red Lightning Recorded in Skies
Three photographers operating in New Zealand have successfully captured visual evidence of “red sprites”, among the rarest celestial events in the world, where bright red bursts become visible in the atmosphere.
A Remarkable Night of Discovery
This group of artists initially planned to shoot the Milky Way over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the lower part of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon.
They thought they would be fortunate to get optimal conditions that after-dark period, but their night became “a night to remember,” an individual involved remarked.
Upon examining his photographs for a galaxy composite and realized he had photographed crimson electrical bursts,” the individual explained. “We just could not believe it – it resulted in excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the night.”
Defining Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are bursts of electrical energy in the mesosphere, produced by electrical storms. In contrast to traditional lightning that shoots towards the earth, red sprites shoot upwards towards the higher altitudes, creating shapes that look like vertical forms, carrots or even jellyfish. The initial image of a red sprite was taken – accidentally – in that year, by a research unit at the University of Minnesota.
Momentary and Otherworldly Sightings
They are so brief – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are infrequently observed to the naked eye, but an individual had a lucky break. “I happened to be looking right at an occurrence when it happened – an ideal happenstance looking at the appropriate section of the heavens and I witnessed a short crimson illumination,” he commented.
Observing the events was a aspiration for the photographer, an acclaimed nocturnal imaging specialist. “It looks like you are observing an unreal vision, it’s very ethereal … it’s this very deep red colour that is there for a split second, so it is fascinating to observe.”
Skill-Based and Innovative Mastery
Recording a red sprite needs a mastery of technical photography, as well as an knowledge about scientific principles and innovative thinking, the individual explained. “It’s a really involved category of art that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
One of the other individuals remarked it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his life. “I could see the Milky Way shining above the skyline while these giant scarlet filaments of energy danced above a storm far on the horizon,” he explained.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
Based on his understanding, there are no additional photographs capturing scarlet electrical bursts and the galactic core from the southern perspective in one frame.
“It represented a unique instance when you understand you are seeing a phenomenon that may not recur in your lifetime.”
