Significant Web Outage Affects Numerous Websites and Mobile Apps
A large-scale online disruption has impacted numerous websites and mobile apps globally, with users reporting problems connecting to the web following issues at the online infrastructure service.
The impacted services include the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-operated services like its key e-commerce website and the Ring device manufacturer.
In the UK, Lloyds bank was impacted in addition to its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with further notifications of difficulties using the HM Revenue and Customs site on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring customers took to social media to report their doorbells were not working.
Just within Britain, reports of problems on particular platforms reached the many thousands for every service.
Officials confirmed that the outage began in the eastern region of the US at AWS, a division that offers essential online backbone for many companies, who rent out resources on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest online services platform.
Soon after late night (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), officials reported “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The ripple effect seemed to affect platforms globally, with the problem monitoring service showing problems with the same sites in multiple continents.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors web disruptions, also reported a rise in outages on the start of the week, and numerous instances located in Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the issues originated.
