The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
