Marvel's Wonder Man Trailer Reveals The MCU's Most Self-Referential Series Ever

Marvel has heard that audiences could be experiencing some superhero exhaustion, so they've decided to incorporate that very idea into their next superhero series.

Indeed, the first preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a self-referential angle on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The preview, which debuted on October 10th, also subtly moved the Wonder Man launch date back from its initial late 2025 slot into early 2026.

Why another superhero movie? People is weary of superheroes. Why go see them in the theater? Wonder Man spoke to me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to surprise audiences. To reinvent the whole category of storytelling.

The reporter replies: "Have you given any thought about casting?"

The preview then transitions to series star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the interview on his mobile device, and the trailer concludes.

Key Details About Wonder Man

We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series stars Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who transforms into a super-powered being (Wonder Man).

The rest of the cast features actor Ben Kingsley returning as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.

Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Strategy

We have limited information about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's evident that the studio plans to poke some fun at itself.

In the aftermath of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the production company is fully committed on self-referential comedy. Will this approach succeed without the star power of its previous leads? We'll have to wait and see.
