2026 Declared the Era of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Frogs are anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their visibility has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are serious amphibian adventures.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the broader culture is also visible elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year yet.
If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
